Overview

The City of Roswell’s Environmental/Public Works Department offers free outreach programs, workshops, and stewardship projects to Roswell schools and community groups. We can assist you with community service projects, teacher workshops, scout badges, and curriculum resources. Programs on environmental issues are also available for civic organizations, homeowners’ associations, and other groups. Some of our programs are sponsored by and presented in partnership with Keep Roswell Beautiful, Roswell’s local environmental nonprofit partner.

Programs and projects span a wide variety of environmental themes including:

  • Water
  • Watershed protection
  • Solid waste and recycling
  • Habitats, wildlife, plants, and soil
  • Conservation and natural resource management
  • Activities with Keep Roswell Beautiful’s Earth Balloon

Programs are organized by Roswell’s Environmental Education Coordinator. Program requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance of the desired date. To request a program, resources, or arrange a stewardship project, please contact Environmental Education at enviroeducation@roswellgov.com or (770) 641-3742.

Community Science & Stewardship

Adopt-A-Road

In partnership with Keep Roswell Beautiful, the Adopt-A-Road program enlists community volunteers to help remove litter to keep our city a clean and safe place for citizens, visitors, and businesses. Groups adopt one-mile section of roadway and the City installs a road sign recognizing each group for their cleanup efforts.

Find out more at Keep Roswell Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Road webpage.

Adopt-A-Stream

In partnership with Keep Roswell Beautiful, the City of Roswell offers training and materials on how to assess the water quality of your stream. Programs include visual assessment, biological sampling, and chemical monitoring. This is a great citizen science project to incorporate into classroom lessons and scout badges in order to promote environmental awareness and scientific literacy. Find out more at Keep Roswell Beautiful’s Adopt a Stream webpage.

Cleanups

The City works with Keep Roswell Beautiful year-round to coordinate general litter cleanups and invasive plant removal. In spring, Keep Roswell Beautiful hosts the Great American Cleanup for individual neighborhood/group cleanups. In fall, Keep Roswell Beautiful hosts Roswell’s single day Rivers Alive Annual Cleanup along our creeks and in Roswell parks. For questions on these events or other cleanup activities, please contact Environmental Education by email or call (770) 641-3742.

Community Wildlife Habitat

The City of Roswell has been a certified Community Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation in 2013. Additional properties, both public and private, need to be certified annually in order to maintain this status. Learn how to participate in this program on our Wildlife Habitat Info page.

Storm Drain Marking

Contrary to popular belief, storm drains do not lead to a sanitary sewer system. Instead, they move rainwater to our nearest streams, rivers, or ponds, carrying along any pollutants on the ground. Help educate local residents about storm water runoff and pollution by marking your neighborhood with decals that read “Only Rain Down the Storm Drain” and distributing informational doorhangers. This is a great service project for all ages. Find out more at Keep Roswell Beautiful’s Storm Drain Marking page.

Educator Workshops & Resources

The Environmental Education Coordinator is certified to train educators in the Project WET (Water Education Today) curriculum. There are also kits and resources available for Roswell educators to access. For more information, please contact Environmental Education by email or call (770) 641-3742.
