Roswell Area Geographic Information Systems (RAGIS) is the central point for management of geographic information pertaining to the City of Roswell. RAGIS is a part of the Engineering division of the Community Development department. The group directly supports the Community Development department; which includes Planning and Zoning, Code Enforcement, Engineering and Land Inspections, Building Inspections, and Economic Development divisions. In addition, the other city departments that make use of GIS department resources are: Recreation and Parks, Fire, Police & E911, Transportation, Finance and Public Utilities.
From a technical standpoint, the GIS allows for displaying the graphic (map) data as "layers of information"; that is, streets on one layer, parcels on another, structures on another, etc. That allows an almost unlimited flexibility for viewing only the desired features and area. "Non-graphic" information is also associated with many map features and is stored in databases for immediate retrieval.
RAGIS is responsible for updating and maintaining a common set of computer-based maps for all of its users. The data covers the entire 39 + square mile geographic extent of the City of Roswell area consisting of 30,000 + parcels. This base map data includes parcels, streets, city limits, aerial photography, lakes and streams, and land lots. RAGIS manages layers of information about zoning, FEMA flood data, parks, fire hydrants and fire stations, economic districts, schools and school districts, structures, land use and more. RAGIS is also depended on for providing hardcopy map products to internal users and selling hardcopy map products and copies of plats to the general public.
