A Message from the Chief
A recent story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that the Roswell Police Department instituted a quota for DUI arrests by its officers.
Roswell Police Chief Ed Williams states that traffic enforcement quotas are forbidden by department policy (37.3 Traffic Enforcement Goals and Objectives) and that a memo from a night-shift sergeant to officers concerning DUI arrests and its reflection on the officers’ performance evaluations does not represent the department’s policy.
“Quotas are bad policy,” Chief Williams explains. “The Roswell Police Department does not have traffic enforcement quotas. It is against our policy, and this has been reiterated to all shift supervisors and officers in the department. Safety, crime prevention and interdiction is our focus, and while traffic enforcement is a good strategy in addressing safety and crime interdiction, quotas are not a part of that strategy.”
Mission
The Roswell Police Department protects life and property, preserves the peace, and strives to prevent crime and disorder in the City of Roswell on behalf of all who live, work, and travel through our city.
