Fire Hydrant Inspections
In an effort to keep the fire hydrants in the City of Roswell in proper operating condition, we have employed a Fire Hydrant Maintenance Technician. With a hydrant inventory of over 5,000, proper maintenance and upkeep is essential for firefighting operations.

Some of the maintenance duties performed are:
  • Clearing weeds, shrubs, and other obstructions to ensure hydrant visibility
  • Painting the hydrant to prevent degradation and to ensure visibility
  • Numbering the hydrant for accurate record keeping and inventory
  • Opening and closing the valves to ensure proper operation
  • Conducting periodic flow tests and flushing hydrants to:
    • Keep water clear and free of debris that may damage fire equipment
    • Help keep impurities from your water to ensure water quality and freshness
  • Assisting sprinkler companies in conducting water flow tests to ensure adequate water supply to sprinkler systems

Reporting Problems
If you are aware of any problems with a hydrant, please feel free to contact our office at 770-641-3730.

Fire Hydrant Flushing
Flushing the fire hydrants not only ensures proper working condition of the hydrant, but it also removes sediment and debris, thereby providing you with cleaner water to use in your home or business.

Flushing is done by opening the fire hydrant and letting the water run out. If we are flushing hydrants in your area, you may experience some discoloration of water, changes in water pressure, or temporary interruption of water service. However, it will not affect the potability of the water, and the conditions will disappear in a short period of time.

In order to maintain an inventory of properly working fire hydrants, the hydrants are inspected, tagged and logged on an annual basis. Accurate records are kept for review and are used, in part, by the insurance companies for the fire insurance rating for your home or business.

Along with flushing the hydrants, the hydrants are painted with reflective silver-colored paint. They are classified and categorized by location.

It is also necessary for the hydrant technician to clear any debris from around the hydrant to ensure it is adequately visible to approaching fire equipment.

Residents are encouraged to report any problems with hydrants in their neighborhood. Residents are also encouraged to keep debris, bushes and any other obstructions from blocking a fire hydrant on their property. If you receive a notice to remove shrubs, bushes or other obstructions please understand the importance of this request.

Fire Inspection for Business Registration
Process
If you are planning on opening a business in the City of Roswell, you must first register with the Financial Services Division of Roswell. You will be required to fill out several forms that are obtained through the Community Development Department.

Emergency Information Form
The Fire Department is most concerned about the Emergency Information form. Please take special care in filling it out completely and accurately. This form will be forwarded to our 9-1-1 center and will be filed with the Fire Department to be used for contact information in the event of an emergency at your business.

When to Move
It is important to remember not to move into a building or tenant space prior to obtaining approval from the City of Roswell. Part of the approval process is to have a fire inspection of the facility done to ensure that it complies with all of the applicable fire and life safety codes. It is in your best interest to go through the approval process prior to occupying the building or tenant space because you may be required to vacate if approval cannot be granted.

Inspection
Again, part of the process to obtain approval to operate a business is to have a fire inspection conducted at your intended business location. When the Fire Marshal's Office receives an approved code clearance form from Community Development, an Assistant Fire Marshal will contact you to set an appointment to conduct an inspection.

Additional Information
If you have any questions concerning the process to operate a business and the forms we use, please contact us at 770-641-3730.

Home Fire Safety Inspection
The Roswell Fire Department, in an effort to keep our residents safe from fire, offers a free home inspection. This home inspection is offered to City of Roswell residents only and will be scheduled by telephone.

During the fire safety inspection of your home we will discuss various fire safety issues. Some of they key topics we will review with the homeowner include:
  • Fire escape planning
  • Proper smoke detector placement and testing procedures
  • Proper placement and types of fire extinguishers
  • Proper storage of combustibles and flammables

Brochures
We offer several fire safety and general home safety brochures that can be picked up at headquarters or brought to you when a fire safety inspection is conducted at your home.

Practicing Safety
Fire safety in the home should involve the entire family, young and elderly alike. If everyone in the family practiced and encouraged fire safety in their home, we would encounter significantly fewer tragedies. We appreciate your efforts in helping keep our city fire-safe and look forward to a request to visit your home.

Requesting Inspections
Home fire safety inspections can be scheduled between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. For more information or to schedule an inspection, please contact Assistant Chief Paul Piccirilli at 770-641-3730.
