The vision of a Village Center in front of Roswell’s City Hall was born out of the Historic Gateway Master Plan Study.  The idea of improving upon the success of Canton Street, creating a walkable “Village” destination, and improving the civic space sparked great interest in the possibilities.  Roswell DOT staff reviewed the initial concept (a Square in the middle of SR 9) from the standpoint of traffic flow and identified many concerns.  Staff brainstormed a new innovative concept that balances the vision connecting the area of Canton Street to City Hall and the need to keep traffic flowing.

The new concept rebuilds the intersection of Atlanta Street (SR 9)/Magnolia Street/Canton Street, creates a Civic Space on the west side of SR 9, and a pedestrian underpass across SR 9.  The concept includes a number of additional features (see the Work Session presentation slides below).

The concept’s proposed infrastructure network is the foundation for a variety of options for the Civic Space area and road frontage (i.e. plazas, future buildings, trees, gathering places, War Memorial relocation).  Staff created a 3D model to show what these improvements could look like.  The images illustrate three options of many.
